Obituary of Charles Roberts Cash

Cash, Charles Roberts.  A former banker and community leader in the Shenandoah Valley, Charles Cash passed away on Monday, July 2.  He was 89.

Mr. Cash was born in Max Meadows, VA on March 3, 1929.  A graduate of Wytheville High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1947. He later attended the American Institute of Banking and began his banking career at Bank of Virginia in Roanoke.  While working in Richmond, he was recruited to join Shenandoah County Bank and Trust in Woodstock, VA.  When those banks joined First Virginia Banks, Mr. Cash became a Senior Vice-President and executive officer in the corporation.  He led the acquisition of community banks from Winchester to Harrisonburg, resulting in the regional group, First Virginia of the Shenandoah Valley.  He retired in 1994.

A long time civic leader in the Shenandoah Valley, Mr. Cash was active in the Jaycees, the Woodstock Rotary Club, the Lions Club, Mt. Jackson Methodist Church and numerous other organizations.  He served on the Mt. Jackson Town Council and spearheaded the rebuilding of the historic Meems Bottom Covered Bridge after it was destroyed by arson, working directly with the VA State Legislature and VDOT. Upon his retirement to Roanoke, he served on the board and as treasurer of the South Roanoke United Methodist Church.

Mr. Cash married the former Shirley Ann Smith of Roanoke, VA in 1954 and had seven children.  Mr. Cash was predeceased by his wife; his son Charles Lewis Cash; and his daughter, Pamela “Suzie” Landis.  He is survived by his daughters, Catherine Greenberg and her husband Brad of Roanoke, VA; Martha “Cissy” Isaac and her husband Steven of Naples, FL and Rainbow Lake, NY; Mary Folkes of Mechanicsville, VA; Jane Cash and her husband Thomas McElligot of Richmond, VA; Priscilla Wiggin of Richmond, VA; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Monday, July 9 at 11 am at South Roanoke United Methodist Church.
